The Dancing Roll

I suppose it makes sense that my first review centers around sushi, as it's been my favorite food for the past 10 years. So of course, I love the fact that there is a sushi place located near my house. It’s located in an unexpected place. One of those strip areas with a random business sitting in the parking lot for some reason (This one a Waffle House). The Dancing Roll is located between a Mediterranean Food market and a computer repair shop. It’s very unassuming, but I often find myself drawn to those places. Tonight, I decided to pay them a visit accompanied by my brother and my mom (who agreed to be my photographer). The wall to the right of the entrance is decorated with coloring pages likely done by children featuring anime cats or Pokémon eating sushi. A very cute touch, in my opinion. We were seated and approached by our waitress in less than five minutes, and our waters were brought out almost promptly after ordering them. Wanting a little time to look over the rolls, we decided to order some Crab Rangoon, more of my brother’s favorite than mine, but still enjoyable. The skin was crisp and the filling wasn’t overpowering. I was particularly drawn to the California Dream. California rolls were my gateway roll into the sushi world and sometimes I just want that nostalgia. But I’d never seen anything like this one before, as it also included spicy tuna and eel sauce. My curiosity was piqued and combined with my love of spicy things, I decided "What the heck?” They offered us complimentary bowls of miso soup with our rolls, and as everyone knows, you always accept a complimentary bowl of miso soup. The bowls were brought out within minutes and were still hot. Not “burn your tastebuds off” hot, thankfully, but more of the nice, comforting hot. The broth was mostly salty but also had a slight sour taste, which I liked. Then our rolls came out, and I discovered that the spicy tuna was on top of the roll rather than in the roll. I was a little worried that it would fall off, but it managed to stay on. The eel sauce combined with the spicy tuna was a nice flavor combination along with the crunchy cucumbers and rich avocado flavor. And while this isn’t much about the food, I did enjoy occasionally glancing over to wall-mounted tv that was showing the World Cup. Truth be told, this was probably the only time this entire season I was even mildly interested in the World Cup, being as I’m not much of a soccer fan. This sushi place does Happy Hour from 5 to 11 where certain rolls are half price, such as the rolls my mom and brother ordered. Even though we ordered and ate before the time window, we still got the Happy Hour discount, ending our visit on a good note. Overall, an enjoyable experience and pretty good sushi for the prices. 8/10. I would go back.
